Prostate cancer is a variable disease, which usually does not produce symptoms in the early stages. Some tumors are so small and grow so slowly that they are sometimes not detected for many years. However, there are also some aggressive cases that can spread and become life-threatening more quickly. When prostate cancer symptoms do occur, it is usually when the disease is in its advanced form.
Most of the time, the cause of prostate cancer is not determined. There have been cases of exposure to radiation and many can also be attributed to hereditary factors. It is very rare that men under fifty get this type of cancer.
Prostate cancer is currently the most common cancer diagnosis in men, especially among the elderly. Early prostate cancer symptoms and signs are usually connected to urination. The tumor presses on the bladder causing irregularities such as difficulty or pain in passing urine. However, urinary problems are also often benign prostate symptoms.
Some prostate cancer symptoms include the presence of blood in the urine. If the cancer has spread to the pelvis, there might be swelling in the legs, as well as pain in the pelvic area. The more advanced prostate cancer symptoms include consistent pain in the bones, some bone fractures, and spinal compression. Prostate cancer symptoms that include pain are serious and usually indicate that the cancer has spread.
As previously mentioned, these prostate symptoms may indicate a benign condition such as a simple prostate enlargement. However, men with prostate symptoms should consult their doctor right away. Prostate symptoms, especially those associated with enlargement of the gland, are not serious and can easily be treated. However, if they indeed prove to be prostate cancer symptoms, an early diagnosis will help immensely. Treatment is usually successful for patients who had their cancer detected early. In cases when the disease has spread before being diagnosed, treatment can prolong the patient’s life and help in pain relief, but cure is usually no longer an option.
Some of the available treatments for prostate cancer are surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, and cryotherapy. Most of these can help in easing pain-related prostate cancer symptoms. These treatments do carry side effects, which are usually impotence and incontinence.
Vigilance is necessary to beat this silent killer called prostate cancer. There is no shame in being a little paranoid about prostate symptoms. Remember, early diagnosis is essential in defeating cancer, so go see your physician as soon as you experience any of the irregularities associated with prostate cancer symptoms. Odds are, even if it is not cancer, it will still need treatment.
